The range of metallics in the Identity Water Based Leather Stain collectio are in a liquid form and can be used in much the same way as the ordinary stains, perhaps with the exception of the Shimmering Pearl.
There are two ways these can be used – to give an overall colour generally requiring 2 coats (dependent on the leather colour underneath – see our video on stains and dyes). Or as a ‘wash’ over the top of coloured leathers. This last can be very effective and the way to achieve this is to thin the stain down with around 50 percent water and mix well, then simply lightly sponge over areas.
With the Shimmering Pearl because it is pale and with a white medium, the translucent effect is magnified, so more of the underlying colour shows through. Again, there are two ways you can use this – either under other water-based leather stains or over the top as a wash to give a pearl look.
The Pearl when used under any of the other colour stains will turn them into a brighter metallic finish – so if you wanted to get a metallic pink or turquoise use the Shimmering Pearl first then apply the chosen colour stain over the top.
As well as the colour pigment the stains contain a small amount of blended waxes that give a soft sheen to leather when buffed up.
Please note that as these products are 'stains' they are translucent and the final colour will be affected by the leather colour underneath. The colours depicted are for a guide only and have been based on an approximation from two coats on a natural veg tan but finished colours may vary. As a rule the darker the colour the less this has an effect.
Note: Water based products hold the dye and binder pigments in a water rather than spirit/alcohol solution making them better for the environment and for the user. They are made to vigorous standards of colour fastness and rub resistance. Can be used with additional top coats such as Supershene.
The Identity Store water based leather stains come in a 125ml bottle and a 500ml size in selected colours.
