LINING UP ALPHABET STAMPS

TODAY’S TOP TIP IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY IAN KNIGHT.

You want to look at personalising your leatherwork – you have got your alphabet set ready, a ruler, mallet and stone block, but sometimes it seems those pesky letters don’t want to fall evenly into place.

To get the best results find an old credit card (or similar)

The old credit card is used to line up the letters, so it’s placed ‘beneath’ the body of the letter and butts up against the top ridge of the actual raised part of the letter.  Use masking tape to hold card in place or a ruler to press down. To ensure that letters with a narrow base such as “I” stay upright, place a ruler at 90 degrees to the credit card against the edge of the stamp.
The edges of credit cards are sometimes sharp and can dig into the leather creating a line. Ian suggests using a piece of fine sandpaper to round the edges of the card preventing this from happening.
